Welcome to the Devilfish interactive map!

Controls:

Use the + and - buttons at the top left to zoom in and out. You can also use the scroll function on your laptop trackpad or mousewheel to zoom in and out on the map's features. If you're using a touchscreen device, pinch to zoom. If using a laptop or PC, hold Shift while drawing a box around an area of interest. This will zoom directly to the area.

Click the small checkbox at the top left of the features toolbar to show all features, and click the magnifying glass icon to search our dataset. You can click or tap any feature to learn more about it - a description window will appear at the bottom right. You may also see a link at the bottom of the description that reads "See more." Click here to view documents, video, and other contextual information.

You can use the filters on the right to sort events by category, and the drop-down list at the top-right to sort taxonomies.

Timeline:

Click the checkbox at the left of the timeline window to engage the timeline controls. You can then control the timeline using the stop, start, step forward, and step backward buttons. Use the fast forward button located below the play button to jump ahead to major events and important turning points in the history of gray whales and people. Use the rewind button to return to the beginning of the timeline.

You can keep track of the approximate population of eastern gray whales using the dynamic population count at the top right of the timeline window. You'll also notice a colour-coded graph in the background of the timeline - this corresponds with the population estimate displayed at the top of timeline window, and also with the colour of the animated migration path each year.

You can return to these tips at any time by clicking the An icon of a lowercase I icon at the top right of the page.
